Acne & Keloid Treatments

Picture
Lets face it, we all, at some point in our lives suffered or is still suffering from acne. Acne effects all ages, young and old, men and women. Some acne clear up on their own and for some, they need a little bit more help. Before we can treat acne, we need to understand the different types of acne and different types of scars it can potentially produce.

What are the different types of acne?
There are various terms that describe different forms of acne, such as comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. Basically, comedones (plural for comedo) are the name given to plugged follicles: an open comedo is called a blackhead because the surface is visible and turns “black” when it’s exposed to air. A closed comedo is a whitehead, which is like a blackhead, but is closed at the surface. Plugged follicles can become irritated and swollen enough to burst, thus affecting surrounding tissues. If a plugged follicle erupts above the skin’s surface, it becomes a pimple; when it erupts below the surface, it forms a red lump, such as a nodule or cyst.

How bad can acne get?
There are basically three levels of severity:
·         Mild acne consists of a few lesions that are close to the surface, and not deep or inflamed.
·         Moderate acne is marked by deeper nodular lesions and some redness.
·         Severe acne involves many lesions, multiple cysts, and a great deal of redness and inflammation.

What can trigger acne flare-ups?
There are a number of factors that can make acne flare up or lead to “breakouts”, although triggers can vary from person to person. Avoiding the things that you notice may make your acne worse is a good way to help control your acne. For example, Cosmetics, Physical Pressure, Sweating, Over-washing, Medications, Menstrual Cycle, Picking or Squeezing, and Food.

Treating Acne
Acne scars come in many different shapes, sizes, and even colors. Each type of scar has its own unique characteristics and features. Because of these differences, the available treatments are not one size fits all, and it is important to carefully choose the treatment that best matches your needs, in order to achieve optimal results.

Rolling Scars: relatively broad depressions in the skin that have rounded, sloping edges.
Box Car Scars: relatively broad depressions, but have steep, defined edges.
Ice Pick Scars: deep and narrow scars.

Rolling Scars Treatments
Because rolling scars have rounded, sloping borders, many of the available scar treatment techniques are capable of producing positive results. Laser Resurfacing (ablative and non-ablative), Intense pulsed light (IPL), Chemical Peels, Microdermabrasion, and even Red Light Therapy can produce improvements in the appearance of rolling scars.

Treatment Plan for Rolling Scars offered at Nu Bloom Esthetics - Chemical Peel, Microdermabrasion, & Red Light Therapy
A Medium Depth Chemical Peel and Clean-Up Peel is used for the initial treatment followed by a series of Rejuvenating Treatment Facials consisting of microdermabrasions and Red Light Therapy will help even out Rolling Scars. It is recommended to combine the Rejuvenating Treatment Facial with Dermarolling Therapy for optimal result.

Box Car Scars Treatments
Laser resurfacing (ablative) often produces good results, although many treatments may be necessary to achieve maximum improvement. Some surgical options for deep scars include punch-out, needling/dermarolling/CIT, and surgical subcisions.

Treatment Plan for Box Car Scars  offered at Nu Bloom Esthetics - Dermarolling or Needling
CIT or Dermarolling Therapy has been successfully used to treat Box Car Scars. The dermaroller produces small injuries to skin tricking the skin to build collagen and "heal" itself. For more information on this type of treatment scroll up to Dermarolling/CIT.

Ice Pick Scar Treatments
Ice pick scars are often the most difficult type of acne to treat without surgical intervention. Ice pick scars are often quite deep, making them very difficult to treat without standard resurfacing techniques. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and many types of laser resurfacing are unlikely to have a significant impact on ice pick scars because those techniques do not remove enough tissue. Some forms of laser therapy may be effective at disrupting the underlying scar tissue. Because ice pick scars are quite narrow, punch-out excisions are a popular, mildly invasive and effective treatment technique.

Treatment Plan for Ice Pick Scars offered at Nu Bloom Esthetics - TCA C.R.O.S.S.
Another very effective treatment for Ice Pick Scars is what we like to call the TCA C.R.O.S.S. Treatment, which stands for TCA Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars.  About 80% or higher concentration of TCA or Tricholoacetic Acid will be used to re-fuse the pitted skin together. The skin will heal in a couple of weeks and turning the once pitted scar into a much more shallow scar or diminish the scar all together. The outcome of the healing process is dependent on the depth of the scar before treatment, some scars might need a couple of sessions to completely diminish (within 1 month apart). This treatment is only suitable for Ice Pick Scars or Depressed Scars. It is not suited for Boxcar Scars and Rolling Scars.

Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars
These two types of scars present a different problem. Hypertrophic scars are this in which excess scar tissue forms at the site of the injury, which presents as a raised region of fibrous and firm scar tissue.

When the scar tissue forms in great excess, it can become a large nodule of dense, rubbery scar tissue that is known as a keloid. The development of hypertrophic and keloid scars is less common in acne clients than the development of depressed scars.

Because hypertrophic and keloid scars are raised, they are more susceptible to treatments like laser ablation and microdermabrasion. They can also be surgically removed. Hypertrophic scars are generally less responsive to treatments like chemical peels, because the scar tissue is much more resistant to the ingredients in the peel than healthy tissue.

Treatment Plan for Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars offered at Nu Bloom Esthetics - Undiluted Cortico-Steroid Shots
A series of undiluted cortico-steroid shots will be injected in the area to be treated. Recommended number of shots is dependent on the size of the scar. It takes about 5 treatments to fully help the scar "deflate."

Zit Injection Treatment

Acne cysts and nodules are unsightly, painful and seem to take forever to disappear. They feel like a boil, embedded deep beneath the surface of the skin. A Zit Injection is used for the treatment of occasional acne cysts or nodules. It is as a one-time injection administered directly into the zit. The Zit Injection treatment quickly shrinks the zit and reduces redness, inflammation and pain. The Zit Injection treatment is also referred to as a ‘pimple injection’, ‘cort shot’, ‘steroid shot’, or ‘zit killer injection’ and known in the medical field as an intralesional corticoidsteroid injection.

The Zit Injection solution consists of a highly diluted cortisone. Cortisone is a steroid which our body naturally produces and releases in response to inflammation. The solution is injected directly into the zit, which immediately stimulates the healing process. Since the Zit Injection is an injectable treatment, it’s level of effectiveness is much greater than a topical acne cream.

Due to the danger of permanent scarring, acne cysts should never be squeezed. If left untreated they can take months to heal. A Zit Injection is a highly effective treatment which can make blemishes quickly disappear, or least heal within 2-4 days.

Healing Timeline
Picture
What are the Benefits of a Zit Injection?
  • Virtually painless
  • Significantly speeds up the healing process
  • Reduces redness and inflammation
  • Helps reduce pain
  • Decreases the chance of scarring and hyperpigmentation, if the zit was to rupture

What type of Zits can be Administered with a Zit Injection?
  • Occasional acne cysts, papules or nodules, which are embedded deep under the surface of the skin

How is a Zit Injection Administered?
The injection is performed with a very fine needle and is virtually painless. A highly diluted corticoidsteroid solution is injected directly into the blemish, which immediately begins to fight the bacteria trapped underneath the skin’s surface.

What can I Anticipate after Treatment?
The injection site can be slightly swollen for several hours following treatment. Since the injection is performed with a very fine needle, there is very little risk of bleeding or bruising. Patients can return to work and all other activities immediately after treatment. Makeup can be applied 30 minutes following treatment.

When can I Expect to see Results?
The healing process starts immediately after treatment. The following day the zit will visibly start to diminish. Dramatic improvements are seen within 2-4 days.

Zit Injection Treatment Price - $20 per injection
Keloid Treatment - $35 per injection
Saline Treatment - $20 per 1ml injection
